LiPo Battery Disposal in Dubai — How We Helped Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre Dispose of Damaged Drone…

Behind that note was a real compliance problem. Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) — one of the UAE's most prominent government space agencies — had a batch of unwanted and damaged lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries that couldn't simply go in a skip. In Dubai, disposing of lithium batteries without a Dubai Municipality (DM) permit is a violation of hazardous waste regulations.

And approaching it the wrong way risks environmental harm, regulatory fines, and — in the case of damaged LiPo cells — a genuine fire hazard. This is the story of how Dotless Green Environmental Services L.L.C managed the compliant LiPo battery disposal for MBRSC, end to end.

Why LiPo Battery Disposal in Dubai Requires a DM Permit

LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries are classified as hazardous waste under Dubai Municipality's waste management framework. Whether they power a consumer drone, a research UAV, or a testing rig, the disposal rules are the same once the batteries are damaged, degraded, or no longer fit for use.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, disposing of hazardous waste — including lithium batteries — requires:

  • An approved WDS (Waste Disposal Service) permit obtained through the DM portal at hub.dm.gov.ae

  • Transport by a company holding a valid DM Hazardous Waste Transporter Permit

  • Delivery to a DM-approved recycling or disposal facility

  • A Recycling Certificate issued upon destruction, which is uploaded to the DM system to close the permit

Without this chain, the waste generator — not the transporter — can be held liable. For a government entity like MBRSC, compliance is non-negotiable.

The Challenge: Budget, Compliance, and a Tight Window

When MBRSC first approached Dotless Green, they had a batch of damaged drone batteries alongside other hazardous materials they needed to clear from their facility in Al Khwaneej First. The initial quotation came back higher than expected.

Rather than walk away, Dotless offered an alternative: MBRSC could apply for the DM disposal permit directly through the government portal, which brings down the total cost significantly while keeping the process fully compliant. Dotless would then collect the materials under the permit and manage disposal through an authorised facility.

It's a solution many organisations don't know exists. The DM portal process is straightforward for the permit holder — but knowing which permit type to apply for, how to categorise the waste correctly, and what documentation the facility will need at collection requires experience. That's where Dotless Green's team provided the guidance.

Let's Get Started
Information

The Disposal Process — Step by Step

Once MBRSC applied for and received the DM permit, the job moved quickly.

WDS Permit issued: 27 July 2026
Permit reference: WDS-270726-78391
Waste classification: 18.3 — Spent batteries, alkaline and other types
Waste location: Al Khwaneej First, Dubai

The permit covered a jumbo bag of unwanted and damaged batteries (approximately 1 kg — a small quantity, but one that still triggers the full DM hazardous waste permit requirement regardless of weight).

Collection date: 7 August 2026

Dotless Green's team collected the batteries using a vehicle holding a valid DM Hazardous Waste Transporter Permit. The consignment was transported to a DM-authorised recycling facility for processing.

Recycling Certificate issued: 10 August 2026
Certificate reference: RC-2026-C7535

The Recycling Certificate confirmed that the material was received, processed, and destroyed in full compliance with UAE Federal Laws, Local Orders, and DM Technical Guidelines — rendering the batteries fully unusable from their original form.

On the same collection run, Dotless Green also handled three additional hazardous waste streams for MBRSC under separate DM permits:

  • Unwanted empty bottles of IPA (contaminated empty chemical containers)

  • Expired and unwanted chemicals (expired products)

  • Expired chemical solvents (unused, in drums)

A single mobilisation covering four separate waste streams — an efficient approach for any facility looking to clear a compliance backlog in one visit.

Why facility teams pick Dotless

Size Doesn't Exempt You from Compliance

The entire battery consignment weighed approximately 1 kg. Dubai Municipality's hazardous waste permit requirement applies regardless of quantity. Whether you have 1 kg or 100 kg of damaged lithium batteries, the same permit process applies.

The DM Portal Route is a Legitimate…

When a client applies for the disposal permit directly, the cost of the job is lower. Dotless Green actively advises clients on this where it makes sense — because a compliant job at a price the client can afford is better than no job at all.

Speed of Documentation Matters

From permit issuance (27 July) to collection (7 August) to Recycling Certificate (10 August) — the total cycle was under two weeks. For organisations with internal compliance timelines or asset-clearance deadlines, this turnaround matters.

Government Clients Require the Same Process as…

MBRSC is a leading UAE government space agency. Their waste disposal process follows the same DM requirements as any private company. There are no shortcuts for government entities — and there shouldn't be.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our services.
Is a Dubai Municipality permit required to dispose of LiPo batteries?

Yes. LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries are classified as hazardous waste in Dubai. Disposal requires a WDS permit issued through the Dubai Municipality portal, transport by a DM-licensed hazardous waste transporter, and delivery to a DM-approved facility. A Recycling Certificate is issued at the end to close the permit.

Who can apply for a DM disposal permit for batteries?

The waste generator — the company or organisation that owns the batteries — applies for the permit through hub.dm.gov.ae using a UAE PASS or DM UM ID account. Dotless Green can guide clients through the application process and advise on the correct waste classification for their material.

Does the quantity of batteries affect the permit requirement?

No. Dubai Municipality's hazardous waste permit requirement applies regardless of quantity. Even small quantities of damaged or expired lithium batteries require a WDS permit. The MBRSC job in this case study involved approximately 1 kg of batteries.

How long does the DM battery disposal process take?

From DM permit application to Recycling Certificate issuance, the process typically runs 10–14 working days depending on DM processing times and collection scheduling. The MBRSC job was completed within approximately two weeks of permit issuance.

Can Dotless Green handle other hazardous waste alongside batteries?

Yes. Dotless Green regularly manages multiple waste streams in a single collection — as with the MBRSC job, which covered LiPo batteries, IPA containers, expired chemicals, and chemical solvents in one visit. Combining waste streams reduces mobilisation costs and is more efficient for the client.

Does Dotless Green provide a Recycling Certificate?

The Recycling Certificate is issued by the DM-authorised recycling facility that processes the waste. Dotless Green collects this certificate and delivers it to the client, along with the completed documentation chain. The certificate is required to formally close the WDS permit on the DM system.
